Charlie Powell

Former SPIRE director of track and field and now coach emeritus, Coach Powell has been at SPIRE Academy since it began. He has coached athletes in almost every discipline who became state qualifiers, state champions and successful collegiate athletes.

Across his career Powell has coached Olympians, two NCAA individual champions, 18 NCAA All-Americans, one Pan Am champion, 60 individual NCAA championship qualifiers, more than 100 individual conference champions, more than 100 All-East athletes and two NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipients. His athletes set 15 conference records, 22 outdoor school records and 21 indoor school records.

In addition to coaching the University of Pennsylvania teams, Powell has been director of Penn Relays Distance Night, coordinator of track events, and a member of the Penn Relays Planning Committee since 1984. He holds a master’s degree in biomechanics and a bachelor’s degree in physical education, both from Western Kentucky. He lives in Chardon, Ohio.
